The Red Square series starts with a secret with a secret visit of the KGB Deputy Chairman Vigun (the prototype’s name was changed intentionally) to his long-standing friend General Secretary Brezhnev’s dacha after an unpleasant conversation with the Politburo ideology guru Suslov. Suddenly Vigun’s car gets stuck in traffic at a special use freeway. The setup is organized by his KGB colleagues. Vigun manages to avoid surveillance and return to Moscow to his service apartment where he dies. The Soviet media attributes his death to grave illness, but the people who are close to the top regard that version as a pure red herring.
