In October of 1915, a capacity audience filled Boston's Symphony Hall for one of ihe most eagerly anticipated concert events of the season—Cecil B. DeMille's film adaptation of the daswc opera Carmen starring the leading soprano of the Metropolitan Opera, Geraldine Farrar, in the title rote. Though the film was silent, live accompaniment was provided by a full symphony orchestra and operatic soloists, alf uodenhe direction of Hugo Riesenfeld. Thanks to the painstaking effofts of me rvoted musicologist and conductor Gillian B. Anderson, Riesenfeld's arrangement of orchestral themes and arias from Bizet's score has been faithfully recreated for this video presentation. The Classic Movie Project is dedicated to restoring archival films to their original splendor. Ihe film source for Carmen was a nitrate print—DeMille's personal copy—preserved in the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. Each scene was then tinted according to the original laboratory notes.

Geraldine Farrar ts heard in her 1914/15 Victor recordings of the Habanera, Seguedilfe, and final scene from Carmen (with Giovanni Martinelli) accompanied by a montage of stilfs and scenes from the film.
