The story is set in the 1790's during the reign of Catherine the Great, the potential for relations. This period was perhaps the darkest days of Japan's self-imposed isolation, and the feeling of opportunities lost looms large here. The author is concerned with bridging the gap between Japan and foreign countries, and this passion is forcefully expressed throughout the movie with respect to relations between Japan and Russia.

Sumptuous filming of the journey of a shipwrecked Japanese expedition from the Pacific Ocean across Siberia to the court of Catherine the Great of Russia. A Russo-Japanese co-production of a unique event in history which was the hit of Cannes and other film festivals but did not receive wide distribution despite its huge scope, high production values, and very human story of culture clash.
