Lazar Gosman (27.05.1926) - Professor, Violin.

Lazar Gosman, renowned throughout the United States and Internationally, is an esteemed music director, concertmaster, solo violinist and teacher.

A major figure in the musical life of the former Soviet Union, Maestro Gosman graduated with highest honors from the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, subsequently joining the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra where he continued to serve as one of this orchestra"s distinguished concertmasters until leaving his native country. For 17 years he was also the Music Director of the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra, an extraordinary ensemble that, under his leadership, championed the works of both Dmitri Shostakovich and Benjamin Britten and developed a repertoire of more than 200 chamber works, while performing with many of the Soviet Union"s most acclaimed artists, including David Oistrakh, Emil Gilels and Gidon Kremer. During these years, the Leningrad Chamber Orchestra made over 40 recording for Melodiya Records, many of which were released in the United States, Europe and Japan. Maestro Gosman was also a member of the faculty of the famed Leningrad Conservatory.

After immigrating to the United States in 1977, Lazar Gosman accepted the position of Associate Concertmaster of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. In that same year, he was appointed a professor at the St. Louis Conservatory, and he established the Kammergild Chamber Orchestra of St. Louis, whose annual concerts he continues to conduct.

In 1979, with the help of friends and supporters, Lazar Gosman founded the Soviet Émigré Orchestra in New York City. Now known as the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra, this marvelous ensemble has touched audiences in the United States and around the world with its "luxurious, passionate and golden sound." Maestro Gosman has appeared frequently as a soloist with his orchestra at New York"s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Philadelphia"s Academy of Music and Washington"s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has toured throughout the United States and Canada, has made repeated tours of Central and South America (in 1982, 1984, 1986, 1989 and 1990) and Europe (in 1983, 1984 and 1990). In 1989, he made his triumphant debut tour of Israel.

Of Lazar Gosman, The New York Times has written: "Mr. Gosman"s playing was luxuriant, almost voluptuous, lovely and irresistible in its fashion. His playing is characterized by warmness, expressiveness, richness of colors, excellent sense of style, and great mastery of technique."

Lazar Gosman"s story has been documented in a full-length film, entitled Musical Passage, which reveals how he came to immigrated to the United States and establish the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra. Musical Passage has been hailed by critics during its theatrical engagement as well as during its PBS telecast in more than 260 cities. Maestro Gosman has also been featured on the CBS and NBC television networks.

In the United States, Lazar Gosman has made recordings for CBS Masterworks, Musicmasters, Musical Heritage Society and SONY Classical. Lazar Gosman currently serves as Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. In 1984, Lazar Gosman and his wife became American citizens. In 1995 Lazar Gosman together with pianist and teacher Lisa Kim founded Grazioso Summer Music Institute in Switzerland and conducted the Grazioso Orchestra in a concert at Carnegie Hall in October 1995.

In the past few years, Kalmus Printing Co. published several arrangements by Professor Gosman including music by Shostakovich, Borodin, and Tchaikovsky. As a result of productive teaching by Professor Gosman, many of his students became the winners of international competitions and have attained important positions all over the world.
