Cesare Valletti

Валетти (Valletti) Чезаре (18.12.1921 - 13.05.2000) - итальянский тенор.

Italian tenor Cesare Valletti was born in Roma 18 December 1921, as a son of a physician. He studied singing under Tito Schipa in his native city and made his debut at the Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari in 1947. The role was Alfredo in La Traviata. Initially he sang Mozart roles at distinct opera houses in Italy when he was asked to sing at the Costanzi in Roma during the 1947-48 season. In 1950 he partnered Maria Callas in Rossini"s Il Turco in Italia in Roma and was invited to sing Fenton (Falstaff) at La Scala, then Nemorino in Elisir d"amore and Conte di Almaviva in Il Baribiere di Siviglia.

There were also appearances outside Italy: In 1950 he travelled with the ensemble of La Scala and their production of Falstaff, and the following year he sang opposite Maria Callas in Mexico City in La Traviata. He also sang at the Colon in Buenos Aires, the Staatsoper in Wien, in Paris and in Amsterdam. In 1952 he was Fenton again at La Scala, in 1953 Lindoro in Rossini"s L"Italiana in Algeri, and it was also the year he made his US debut: In September he sang Werther in San Francisco and in December he made his Met debut as Don Ottavio in Mozart"s Don Giovanni.

One of the definitve highlights of his career came at La Scala in March 1955 when he partnered Callas in Bellini"s La Sonnambula. Conductor was Leonard Bernstein. They met again in London in 1958 for La Traviata. He was also succesful at the festival of Verona in 1956 and at the Maggio Musicale of Firenze in 1958 as Giacomo in Rossini"s La Donna del Lago.

The 1959-60 season he sang mostly at the Met, reportedly in some 79 performances in roles such as Almaviva, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Alfred in "Die Fledermaus," Alfredo in La Traviata, Des Grieux in Manon and Tamino in "Die Zauberflöte." Nonetheless, his career at the Met came to a sudden stop in 1960 when manager Rudolf Bing substituted Valletti after dress rehearsal in a new producton of Elisir d"amore. The dismissal had no clear reason and was taken ill up by Valletti. Despite later invitations to appear at the Met, Valletti refused to return and never sang at the Met again.

For the remainder of his career Valletti sang in Italy and was particularly popular at the Maggio Musicale in Firenze (Florence), where he sang Idamante in Idomeno (1962) and Gianetto in Rossini"s La Gazza Ladra (1965). In 1967 he decided to retire but made one last performance in 1968 at the Carramoor Festival in the US (New York State) in Monteverdi"s L"Incoronazione di Poppea.

Cesare Valletti died of a heart attack in Roma on 13 May 2000 while under treatment of live cancer. He was 78.
