Rati Agnihotri

Rati Agnihotri (10.12.1960, Mumbai) is a veteran Indian actress. Her portfolio mainly includes films in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.

Agnihotri hails from a Punjabi Brahmin family. Her father"s job took him to Tamil Nadu. As a result, the family settled in Madras.

When she was just sixteen years old, director Bharati Raja saw her in a school play and gave her the female lead in the Tamil film Pudhiya Varpukkal (1979). Bhagyaraj, her leading man, coached her by teaching her Tamil. Pudhiya Varpukkal became a blockbuster and it brought Rati into the entertainment spotlight in South India.

She also starred in Telugu and Kannada films and acted in thirty-two films in South India in just three years. Her fame in South Indian films led to her starring role in the Hindi film Ek Duuje Ke Liye (1981) with Kamal Haasan. The film earned her a Filmfare nomination as Best Actress and made her a huge star in Hindi films in the early 1980"s.

In 1985, Agnihotri married architect Anil Virwani, with whom she has a son, Tanuj, and her film career virtually ended.
In 2001, Rati returned to acting with her role as Kajol"s mother in Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi (2001), encouraged by her son to do so. Becoming more confident, Rati ventured into the world of stage acting and eventually took part in television serials.
