Henry Purcell
Родился в Лондоне. В отрочестве (до 1673) пел в Королевской капелле, затем стал помощником Джона Хингстона, которого в 1683 сменил на посту органного мастера и королевского хранителя музыкальных инструментов. В 1677 был назначен постоянным композитором для оркестра Скрипки короля (composer-in-ordinary for the King"s violins), а в 1679 сменил своего учителя Джона Блоу в должности органиста Вестминстерского аббатства. В 1680 или 1681 женился и примерно тогда же начал писать музыку для театра. В 1682 был назначен органистом Королевской капеллы. Полномочия Перселла как придворного музыканта были подтверждены королями Яковом II (1685) и Вильгельмом III (1689); во время коронации обоих королей Перселл выполнял обязанности второго органиста. Последней церемонией, для которой Перселл написал музыку, стали похороны королевы Марии (начало 1695). Перселл умер в конце того же года; 26 ноября он был погребен в Вестминстерском аббатстве.
