Yvette Chauviré (born 1917), regarded as one of the greatest dancers to come out of France, was the first and only star of the paris Opera Ballet to don the mantle of
PRIMA BALLERINA ASSOLUTA. After earning international attention as star of the film LE MORT DU CYGNE (1937), Chauvire appeared as guest artist with such companies as
the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, London's Festival Ballet, the Royal Ballet and the Berlin Opera Ballet. But the Paris Opera Ballet was her spiritual home and she
eventually became the director of the Paris Opera School where she was a mentor to the extraordinary ballerinas who succeeded her.

In this absording tribute to Chauvire, filmmaker Dominique Delouche captures her detailed coaching sessions with stars of the Paris Opera Ballet. Classical perfection was the
hallmark of Chauvire's dancing, with a strong emphasis on body and shoulder placement (EPAULEMENT), and this is everywhere evident in her work with her younger colleagues,
elevating their performances both artistically and stylistically.

In addition, the film includes rare performance segments spanning a variety of styles: we see Chauvire in an excerpt from GISELLE with Rudolf Nureyev, in one of her signature
roles, THE DYING SWAN, and in full clown costume for an Artists Union Gala.We also follow Chauvire on a fascinating visit with Henri Sauguet, composer of the music for the
ballet LES MIRAGES.

Originally titles YVETTE CHAUVIRE: UNE ETOILE POUR L'EXAMPLE, this film was a Cannes Film Festival selection and was also included in the Film Society of Lincoln
Center's 2008 acclaimed series "Dominique Delouche: Ballet Cineaste."Among Delouche's many inspired directorial touches is the use of a montage of spoken phrases from the
Heine work that inspired GISELLE to accompany Florence Clerc's studio performance of Giselle's Mad Scene.
